There’s going to be a lot of finger-pointing going on over who’s to blame for DC Universe cancelling Swamp Thing after airing only one episode even after having earned early audience and critical praise. It’s pretty safe to say that there will be enough reasons for it to go around – twice. One person who has no interest in having any finger-pointing going North Carolina’s way is Guy Gaster, the Director of the North Carolina Film Office.
Gaster contacted Comic Book Resources (CBR) to push back on earlier reports that an administrative/paperwork mistake involving grant funding for the series led to its being shut down. The state official clarified that Warner Bros. was fully aware of the numbers at play from the very start when they entered into a contract with the state.
Here’s the statement Gaster provided to CBR, offering a breakdown of the series’ tax rebate/grant situation:
“The production team for Swamp Thing knew before production began that North Carolina would offer up to $4.9M in rebates for their pilot episode and $12M for the remainder of season one. They accepted said offer and even signed a contract with the state with those figures. Per state legislation, the NC Film and Entertainment grant can only award up to $12M per season for a series. Per the program’s guidelines, pilot episodes are counted as their own series. In total, the program only receives $31M annually.”
In April, news reports began circulating that production on the series was ending early. According to sources speaking with Star News Online, the show’s production crew were notified of the news as writers worked to rewrite the season’s/series’ ending. Reports that production was ending early (with 10 episodes as opposed to the originally ordered 13 episodes) were confirmed, with sources saying that the change was due to “creative differences” between the show’s creators and streaming service.
