Classic X-Men Villain Was Reportedly Going to Debut in New Mutants
This past week, it was revealed that Fox had shuffled release dates again and that The New Mutants had been pushed back once again, this time to April 2019. Earlier reports suggested that the initial delay was to add a new character, and now thanks to The Tracking Board, we have a better idea as to why the film was pushed for a second time.
In an extensive breakdown of why The New Mutants has been moved to 2019, The Tracking Board revealed that a fan-favorite actor was set to portray the role of Mr. Sinister in the film’s post credits scene. Jon Hamm, who is often fan-cast in various comic book roles, reportedly filmed a tag scene for the film as Mr. Sinister, but with the reshoots, that tag has since been cut and with it the actor’s involvement with the film.
With Hamm out, the film is now bringing in Antonio Banderas for an unspecified villain role. The actor isn’t expected to play Mr. Sinister, so it’s unknown just what role he’s being eyed for, however, like with Hamm, his character is expected to debut in the film’s tag.
Additionally, The Tracking Board reports that earlier drafts of the film included the character Warlock. The character was said to have been cut from the film due to budgetary concerns, however, director Josh Boone has previously hinted that the character could very well turn up in a potential sequel — along with Karma — if he has his way.
As for the reports that over half of the film will be reshot, those rumors seem to be correct. It’s said that the second half of The New Mutants is essentially locked, however, the first half of the film will need to be reworked. The reasoning? Following the success of It, studio executives were said to want the film to be more of a horror film — much like Boone had originally envisioned — akin to the film’s trailers. Still, despite what is being described as “creative differences” between Boone and Fox, it’s said that the film isn’t beyond saving at this point and that the studio is trying to be sure it doesn’t end up like Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot.
Arriving Aug. 2, 2019, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot.
