The original movie was to revolve around Silver Sable, the boss of a war criminal bounty org, and burglar Black Cat. The first title will likely be Black Cat. It is also expected that Gina Prince-Bythewood, the writer and director of Silver & Black, will depart, but still produce the separate films. If she leaves, the studio will reportedly hire another female director. Sony has access to 900 Marvel characters, and its intent is to grow canons and franchises. Other Sony Marvel properties in the mix are Daniel Espinosa-helming Morbius with Jared Leto starring as the lead vampire and Spider-Man villain, plus projects like Silk, Jackpot and Nightwatch with the studio looking to hire screenwriters for those titles. The expansion of the Spider-Man universe, outside of Homecoming and without Disney/Marvel’s Kevin Feige, hinges on the opening of bad webslinger Venom during the first weekend of October. That pic, which just underwent reshoots in California, is expected to maintain a hard PG-13 rating. Variety had the news first today on Sony’s Spider-Man-verse plans moving forward.

www.cbr.com/sony-shelving-silver-and-black-spider-man-spinoff/Sony Is Shelving Its Silver & Black Spider-Man Spinoff After reports of Sony’s Silver & Black halting production, having its script rewritten and the film ultimately falling off Sony’s release schedule, the studio appears to finally be shelving Silver & Black for good. According to Variety, Sony has decided to split Silver & Black‘s co-stars, Black Cat and Silver Sable, into their own solo movies, with plans for a Black Cat feature film up first. “We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film,” Columbia Pictures President Sanford Panitch said. The news comes as Sony looks to capitalize on the release of Venom to set up a new superhero cinematic shared universe consisting of Spider-Man heroes and villains. The site goes on to say the internal name for this Spider-Man universe is “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, or SUMC,” which Panitch has been tasked with overseeing. A report in January listed March as the beginning of production on Silver & Black, but word came down in February that production had been put on hold “indefinitely.” Next came leaks of the script being overhauled, with Silver & Black finally falling off of Sony’s 2019 schedule altogether. The plan now is to have Black Cat and Silver Sable headline their own standalone films, helping Sony to bring more diverse superheroes to the big screen. Gina Prince-Bythewood was slated to write and direct Silver & Black, but with the film no longer being made, Sony will list her as a producer on each solo project. Sony is reportedly eager to work with Prince-Bythewood again in the future.
