Batman Movie Apparently Won’t Address Jason Todd’s Death After All
It may have been a popular choice of storyline, but the death of Jason Todd apparently won’t be a focus of director Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both making reference to the fallen Robin who helped to shape Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight into the grizzled vigilante, Jason Todd’s untimely demise may seem ripe for development. But while a rumor rapidly circulated on Wednesday that Reeves’ film will be set in the aftermath of Robin’s death, a new report has just as swiftly debunked that.
An unnamed Warner Bros. insider told TheWrap that latest scuttlebutt is, in a word, “false.”
Director Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman famously depicted on display in the Batcave a Robin costume spray-painted with the words “HAHAHA Joke’s on you Batman.” Warner Bros. later confirmed the suit belonged to Jason Todd, evoking the 1988 DC comics storyline “A Death in the Family,” in which the second Robin was murdered by The Joker. However, a Suicide Squad Easter egg that suggested Harley Quinn at least played a role in the death of the DC Extended Universe’s Jason Todd.
Rumors swirled around The Batman long before Reeves succeeded Affleck as director, and they’re unlikely to stop anytime soon. Everything from the movie’s villains to its relationship to the other DC films to who might actually star as the Dark Knight have been the subjects of speculation. Reeves has even had to respond to respond to insinuations that he’s planning to leave the project. As is stands, however, the filmmaker says development is going “really, really well.”
