Posted by Gavin Sheehan November 24, 2018
20th Century Fox just piqued a lot of people’s interest today as they filed a new gaming trademark for an IP called Alien: Blackout. According to the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) database, the company officially filed the application on Thanksgiving Day, which we assume was done to fly it under the radar a bit, under classification guides 9 and 41, as seen below.
9 – Computer game discs; software, namely, game software, computer game and video game software, downloadable computer game software, downloadable mobile application software used for playing electronic games and streaming audiovisual and multimedia content in the fields of games and entertainment, interactive game software, and downloadable software used for playing electronic games and streaming audiovisual and multimedia content regarding science-fiction, action, adventure, drama, and music; downloadable software featuring entertainment information regarding science-fiction, action, adventure, drama, and music.
41 – Providing on-line computer games; providing electronic games services by means of the internet; entertainment services, namely, providing interactive online computer games utilizing communication networks, including global communication networks.
It’s been a minute since we’ve seen an Alien game, as Alien: Isolation was released back in 2014 published by SEGA. There’s no way to tell how far into planning and development the IP is based on the trademark, so there’s no way to tell when Alien: Blackout will be announced to the public properly. But we do know this… Hideo Kojima may have tipped his hand in this project a little early as he posted this tweet just a couple days ago. Let the speculation begin!
