Avengers: Infinity War Producer Talks Balancing Massive Budgets
Posted by Kaitlyn Booth April 6, 2018
When it comes to movie budgets, Avengers: Infinity War is probably going to be one of the biggest ever. With a baseline budget of $300 million not including marketing, it would be insane to try to balance a production this big. But Victoria Alonso, executive VP of physical production for Marvel Studios, maintains the balancing act.
We have a hard time figuring out how many people are in Infinity War, but Alonso had to make sure there was enough money to make one of the most ambitious projects ever work. She recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter about trying to keep all of this insanity together.
Infinity War is a dream come true. Everybody has had other journeys, but this is sort of the moment in time where their journeys collide. We didn’t have everyone there all the time. That only happened for two or three days.

Alonso said she was there for one of the days that everyone was present, and she revealed that it was extremely emotional time for her. She also dropped an interesting name, but we don’t know if that’s implying this person will be Infinity War.
Yes. I’m not going to lie to you, I cried. You say to yourself, “Huh?” You have big stars talking about other big stars as in, “Gasp, is that Michelle Pfeiffer? It is! Oh, was that so-and-so?” It’s like their little Hollywood moment, which I found lovely and endearing.
There are challenges for every project, but it turns out that there are things out of your control that can really throw a budget out of whack — such as the weather not cooperating.
Every movie has its own challenge. When we were shooting the waterfall scene in Black Panther, the sun was hitting the water in such a way that it was reflecting in the eyes of the actors and making some people feel dizzy. So we had to stop shooting. It rains in Atlanta a lot, as it does in London. You are constantly chasing weather. You have no way of managing that. The weather in L.A. is great, but we recently got rained out for two days on Captain Marvel. We were like, “Are you kidding me? We are in L.A. where it never rains!”

Finally, Alonso talked about when they decide to build sets compared to when they decide to just shoot with a green screen. The main reason comes down to how much more expensive it is to build a set, so they need to make sure they choose the right set to build.
If we could have it our way, we would always build a set, because there is nothing better for the actors’ performance. For an actor, when they walk into an actual location, they feel the life of that character. But it is probably twice as expensive to build it than to build it in computer graphics.
We’re mere weeks away from the release of Infinity War, and it’s going to be interesting to see if everyone at Marvel can really pull this off. It’s kind of insane that it’s already so close to actually being released. This one always felt very far away for some reason.
Summary: As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Anthony Mackie. It will be released on April 27th.
