Adria Arjona In Talks For Female Lead In Jared Leto-Led 'Morbius' Movie At Sony

EXCLUSIVE: Adria Arjona is in talks to play Martine, the female lead in Sony’s Morbius feature film which has Jared Leto starring. Daniel Espinosa is directing the Spider-Man Universe spinoff based on Marvel Comics’ antihero Morbius the Living Vampire.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, the renowned biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius first debuted in the 1970s The Amazing Spider-Man #101 issues. He attempts to cure a fatal blood disease by injecting himself with a treatment serum derived from bats, which transforms him into the anti-hero Morbius. He has all the qualities of a vampire, including a taste for human blood.

In the comics, Martine, who is engaged to Morbius, becomes a potential victim to his bloodlust as he grapples with the transformation that has made him a weird laboratory version of the supernatural vampires of lore.

Sony declined comment on Arjona.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama co-wrote the Morbius script. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster. Palak Patel will oversee for the studio.

In addition to this, Arjona has signed on for Olivier Assayas’ spy drama Wasp Network, joining Penélope Cruz, Pedro Pascal and Edgar Ramirez. Based on Fernando Morais’ book The Last Soldiers of the Cold War, the film tells the true story of Cuban spies in American territory during the 1990s, revealing the tentacles of a Florida-based terrorist network — with ramifications in Central America and with the consent of the U.S. government. Shooting is scheduled to commence early 2019.

Arjona, who made TV history as the first Latina and bilingual Dorothy in NBC’s short-lived series Emerald City, was most recently seen on the big screen in Universal’s Pacific Rim Uprising and the Melissa McCarthy-starrer Life of the Party. Repped by UTA, Anonymous Content, and Stone, Genow, Smelkinson, her upcoming projects include Netflix’s Triple Frontier with Ben Affleck and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens series at Amazon.

'Morbius': Adria Arjona in Early Talks to Join Jared Leto

Adria Arjona has found a new role to sink her teeth into.

The Pacific Rim: Uprising star is in early talks to appear opposite Jared Leto in Morbius, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Sony had no comment on the casting.

She would play Martine Bancroft, who in the comics was engaged to Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and turned himself into a living vampire while seeking a cure. She debuted in 1971's Amazing Spider-Man No. 102 and could be said to be accidentally responsible for Morbius’ transformation into a vampire-like creature, as it’s the human Morbius’ love for fiancee Martine that drives him to experiment on himself.
Scandinavian filmmaker Daniel Espinosa, who helmed the sci-fi thriller Life, is directing Morbius. The film has a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the team behind Netflix’s Lost in Space remake. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.

Arjona previously starred as Dorothy on NBC's Emerald City. Coming up, she has Michael Bay's 6 Underground, opposite Ryan Reynolds, as well as Triple Frontier, opposite Charlie Hunnam and Ben Affleck.

The notion Sony's universe of Spider-Man characters succeeding without Spider-Man at its center was given a big boost in October after Tom Hardy's Venom overperformed at the box office. It has earned more than $852 million globally. The studio has the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters this weekend.
