Infinity War: We Finally Know What That Massive Ship Is Called
One of the big — and we do mean big — mysteries of Avengers: Infinity War has been just what that enormous circular spacecraft is that appears above the New York City skyline in the trailers, spurring Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange into action. While we don’t yet have all the answers about the vessel, we now at least know what it’s called.
Ready? It’s a Q-Ship.
We’d previously suggested it looked more like an ouroboros — y’know, the snake eating its own tail — but if you squint and tilt your head, you can see how it might be a Q. We’re guessing the giant “clasp” opens to form the tail of the capital letter. Its name comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which unfortunately doesn’t have much in the way of additional details.
However, we know from the epic new Infinity War trailer that Iron Man propels the Q-Ship back into space — and previous promos have revealed that Peter Parker, clad in his new Iron Spider armor, goes along for the ride. Doctor Strange is there, too, as we learn from the latest footage.
It’s apparently aboard the Q-Ship that the three heroes meet members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, led by Star-Lord, who in a perfect moment informs Tony Stark that his plan “sucks.” The Q-Ship crashes onto a planet that we can probably assume is Thanos’ home world of Titan, now uninhabited following events that aren’t yet clear. The fate of Titan, and his own inability to prevent it, is what fuels Thanos in his quest to destroy one-half of the universe in order to save the other.
What role the Q-Ship plays in his plan isn’t known, but it appears as if Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the Guardians succeed in destroying it. Of course, it may not be the only one in Thanos’ arsenal.
The name “Q-ship” has its root in history, as merchant ships with concealed weaponry used during the first and second World Wars to lure enemy submarines to the surface and then sink them.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 27.
