Brian Michael Bendis Confirms He’s Still Working on the Mysterious X-Men Movie ‘143’
At this point, everyone more or less assumes that the only X-Men related thing that is going to survive the Disney merger is [ironically] Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. The rest of the movies that everyone is working on are reportedly on hold. It turns out that there are some people working behind the scenes who don’t know that. A little over a year ago it was announced that Fox had hired Brian Michael Bendis was hired to write an X-Men project titled 143 with Tim Miller directing. We haven’t heard anything since but Bendis recently confirmed to ComicBookMovie that he’s still actively working on the screenplay.
“I’m literally working on it today. I know there’s confusion and guesswork about what’s going on with Fox and Disney but I have no information about that. I do not know what is going on with anything other than that I have been contracted to do something I’m very excited to do with someone I really, really like as a creator. I think Tim is one of the best ever and I’m having a really good time doing it so we’ll see what happens. Honestly, I was literally taking a break from writing it to check Twitter the other day and someone said ‘Hey, what’s going on with that thing?’ and I said I’m working on it right now but didn’t realise that was news so, yeah, I’m still working on it.”
There are plenty of screenplays that get written and never make it beyond that point. The Fox of early 2018 is not the Fox of 2019 and just because Bendis writes this screenplay doesn’t mean the movie is getting made. There is still a chance though since we can only guess what kind of plans Marvel might have in store for the X-Men once the sale goes through likely sometime this year. Even then they might wait years before announcing any X-Men related properties and then this script could get used. Until then it’s cool to hear that Bendis is still working on the project even if it exists in a strange form of limbo right now.
Summary: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn it into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.
Dark Phoenix, directed by Simon Kinberg, stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult. It will be released on June 7, 2019.
