The Line-Up for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Reportedly Revealed
Posted by Kaitlyn Booth March 7, 2019
The Suicide Squad is turning into one of those movies where people are a little excited but also not quite sure what to think. We also don’t know that much about the production though it seems that is about to change. Collider has reportedly gotten their hands on the line-up for this James Gunn written and directed entry and it’s an interesting one, to say the least.
Peacemaker aka Christopher Smith: one of the characters acquired by DC Comics when they bought up all of the characters from Charlton Comics. He first appeared in November 1966 and pacifist so committed to peace that he is willing to use force which seems a bit like an oxymoron. This is reportedly the role that Gunn is considering for Dave Bautista. He hasn’t been a member of the Suicide Squad in the past.
Polka-Dot Man aka Mister Polka Dot: a Batman villain which first appeared in Detective Comics #300 in 1962. He’s had a scattering of appearances throughout the years but his motives for why he turned to a life of crime appear to be unknown. He uses advanced technology on his suit to change into “a variety of devices”. He has not been a member of the Suicide Squad in the past.
King Shark: this is a villain that fans of The Flash over on the CW will be familiar with. This character made his debut in October of 1994 in Superboy vol. 4 #0. He is a humanoid shark and would likely be the muscle of the group. Unlike the previous two members, King Shark has been a member of the Suicide Squad in the past.
Ratcatcher aka Otis Flannegan: this is the most interesting of the new character because, according to Collider, this will be a gender-swapped villain. The version from the comics was first introduced in Dectective Comics #585 in 1988. She will reportedly have a fondness for poisonous gas and have control over a small army of rats that she can control. The comics version of this character has not been a member of the Suicide Squad.
Meanwhile, sources say that the new Squad script positions Deadshot as a surrogate father of sorts to Ratcatcher, though the role remains open to actresses of all nationalities and ethnicities.
To be fair a lot of us had the same reaction when they announced the line-up for the first movie as well. As for returning players, it’s all very murky. There is a decent to good chance that Margot Robbie will make some sort of appearance as Harley Quinn and we just got word that Idris Elba is looking to replace Will Smith as Deadshot. The same report about Elba also cast doubt whether or not Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg will make an appearance and there hasn’t been anything one way or another about Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.
The Suicide Squad will be released on August 6, 2021.
