Fox Almost Made a Superhero Film Featuring Every Marvel Hero It Owned
Although Fox kept its Fantastic Four and X-Men film universes separate, X-Men: First Class writer Zack Stentz revealed the studio at one point had plans to put all of its heroes, which at the time also included Daredevil, into a single film.
"My ex-partner and I, when we were working at Fox and we were working on X-Men: First Class, we did a secret movie for them that, I can't tell you what the plot was, but I can tell you that it used all of the characters, all of the Marvel characters that Fox had at the time in 2011," Stentz told Kevin Smith on his Fatman Beyond podcast. "It used the X-Men. It used the Fantastic Four. It used Daredevil. It used Deadpool. Daredevil was still at Fox at the time. We almost had Paul Greengrass directing it which would've been so cool but he had another project to do instead. It didn't end up going but it was a script I was really proud of and it would've been really good."
"This was at Fox in 2011, which doesn't really exist anymore, so maybe they won't sue me for revealing," he continued."Even though, I didn't reveal what it was called."
Stentz's comments make reference to Daredevil's time at Fox, where he had a solo movie starring Ben Affleck in the title role. Rights to Daredevil reverted back to Marvel Studios around 2013.
As the rights to Marvel heroes previously held by Fox now belong to Disney, the X-Men and Fantastic Four are fair game for future Marvel Studios films. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says fans shouldn't expect to see the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for "a very long time."
Directed and written by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Evan Peters as Quicksilver and Jessica Chastain. The film arrives in theaters June 7.
