The Final Infinity War Trailer May Spoil An Avenger’s Last Stand
WARNING: The following article may contain a major spoiler for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
There’s a lot to unpack in the final Avengers: Infinity War trailer, with characters interacting for the first time, sieges across multiple continents and the fate of the entire universe at stake. And among the chaos, there may also be a brief glimpse of a fan-favorite Avenger’s final fight.
We know that not all of the Avengers are going to make it out of the film alive, and speculation is rampant as to which Avenger will kick the bucket. And, if we take a look at one of Avengers: Infinity War‘s biggest inspirations from the comics and how it seems to be reflected in the trailer, we may actually be able to predict which Avenger will bite the dust.
The film is based on a number of different sources, but without a doubt one of the biggest inspirations for the film is Jim Starlin, George Perez and Ron Lim’s iconic event comic The Infinity Gauntlet. Just like in the film, Starlin’s Thanos seeks to eradicate half of the universe’s population, but a big difference is that in the comics, he accomplishes his goal before the heroes of Earth even know there’s a threat.
After the universe has been decimated, Adam Warlock and the Silver Surfer organize the surviving heroes into a strike-force to take out Thanos, who plows through their ranks until there’s only one man left standing: Captain America.
At this point in the story, Thanos has taken out everyone that has crossed his path — Gods, aliens and cosmic entities alike. Still, Captain America doesn’t flinch as he takes those fateful steps towards The Mad Titan. Steve Rogers gives one of his greatest ever speeches ever, telling his foe, “As long as one man stands against you, Thanos, you’ll never be able to claim victory.”
Unfortunately for Cap, in this moment he’s just a pawn of Adam Warlock. As Thanos is distracted by Captain America, Warlock sends the Silver Surfer to try to steal the Infinity Gauntlet — but the Surfer misses. Thanos, realizing how this distraction nearly cost him his great power, turns back to Steve Rogers and, with a simple backhanded slap, he kills Captain America, who slumps down to the floor in a lifeless heap.
One of the most shocking moments in the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer is the brief moment where Chris Evans’ Captain America goes toe-to-toe with Josh Brolin’s Thanos, attempting to block the Infinity Gauntlet and possibly even take it off the Mad Titan. If that scene goes anything like the encounter from the comic, the next several moments may include the death of Captain America, which could potentially lead to either Winter Soldier or Falcon taking on the mantle in Avengers 4 — and beyond.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 27.
