Disney 'Unimpressed' With New Mutants, Doubtful of Box Office Potential
by Sam Stone – on Aug 13, 2019 in Movies, Movie News
As Disney begins to evaluate its recent acquisition of Fox and its various properties, the likelihood of The New Mutants receiving a wide theatrical release remains in doubt.
Following a quarterly earnings call with Disney CEO Bob Iger, Fox's recent flop, Dark Phoenix, was singled out as a reason for the studio's quarterly loss. Now, a new report claims that Disney is unimpressed with Fox's The New Mutants and sees it as having limited potential for box office success upon its planned theatrical release.
The release of the horror-tinged X-Men spinoff has been delayed from its initial planned release date of April 13, 2018 several times before landing its current release date of April 3, 2020. At CinemaCon in April, Disney confirmed the film is still planned to receive a theatrical release, though, as of May, reshoots to complete the film's ending have yet to take place.
Directed and co-written by Josh Boone, the film follows a group of mutants that discover their new abilities as they find themselves stalked by a sinister antagonist in a secret government facility where they're held captive.
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot. The film is scheduled to be released on April 3, 2020.
