Why doesn’t Disney buy DCEU?
David Mullich, worked at The Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company hasn’t and won’t buy the film rights to the so-called DC Expanded Universe for two reasons:
Doing so wouldn’t give them access to a market or demographic that they aren’t already doing extremely well in. Disney bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 to broaden their appeal to adolescent boys, and the results have been spectacular. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently the highest-gross film franchise, while the DCEU is the eleventh. [1] Disney’s money is best spent on other things that will be of a greater benefit to their business.
Warner Bros. has owned DC Comics since 1967, and while some of the more recent DC films haven’t met their financial expectations, they still earned a cumulative $2,063.5 million in domestic box office receipts. The films are still a profit center for Warner Bros., and they aren’t about to sell the film rights to a competitor like Disney.
