Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse Features These Classic Spider-Man Villains
Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is already being heralded as an animated superhero film like no other. With its unique style, the film is the first to finally to expand upon the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man and the others who have worn the costume — namely, Miles Morales.
At CinemaCon, we finally received more insight into what enemies Miles is up against, with footage revealing three Marvel villains, at least two of whom mainstream audiences may recognize: the Ultimate version of the Green Goblin, the Kingpin and The Prowler.
Those who watched Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films will undoubtedly know Green Goblin, played there by Willem Dafoe. Fans of Netflix’s Daredevil will have seen that show’s version of the Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. In Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, The Prowler, aka Aaron Davis, is Miles Morales’ uncle (seen briefly in Spider-Man: Homecoming portrayed by Donald Glover), although in the Spider-Verse storyline, his real identity is Hobart Brown. There multiple iterations of these villains, and Sony is sure to have its own take based on how the script incorporates the various comics that have contributed to Miles’ story.
According to those at CinemaCon, there was footage of Miles’ Spider-Man facing off against the three foes. The footage also revealed that Jake Johnson will voice the older, orginal Spider-Man, Peter Parker.
Miles Morales was created in 2011 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli as part of Marvel’s Ultimate line of comics. He assumed the identity of Spider-Man after the death of that universe’s Peter Parker. Following the end of Marvel’s Ultimate imprint in 2015, Miles was integrated into Marvel’s main universe and is now part of the Champions.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrives in theaters on Dec. 14. The film stars Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Mahershala Ali and Liev Schreiber.
