Is Non-Binary Actress Being Considered for The CW’s Batwoman Sufficiently “Gay Enough”?

When Ruby Rose announced her sudden departure from Batwoman after the first season finale, many people were surprised. Insiders however reported that her exit wasn’t a big surprise within the show. Rose was reportedly unhappy with the unrelenting schedule of shooting network television and being stuck in Vancouver, and she felt the series was limiting her movie career.
The second season of Batwoman is set to air in January 2021, meaning they’ll need to start filming the moment the COVID-19 restrictions lift. That tight timeframe also means that The CW is now busily hunting for someone to step into the cape and cowl and even play a different character. So far, the network has somewhat narrowed their potential casting choices by confirming that the role will be played by an LGBTQ actress, and now we’re hearing that one name that’s being heavily considered.
Sources say that The CW is currently looking at The Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, who’s also appeared in Everything, Everything, The Hate U Give, Where Hands Touch and Netflix’s The Eddy. She identifies as non-binary, has come out as gay and is outspoken about her feminist views, and is also a person of color, all of which, according to LGBTQ activisits and slacktivists on Twitter, make her perfectly qualified to play Batwoman.
The actress uses both ‘she/her/hers’ and ‘they/their/theirs’ pronouns and briefly dated singer Mikaela Mullaney Straus, better known by her stage name King Princess. A few years ago Stenberg said she had stopped using a smartphone because she thought phones and social media can have a negative effect on mental health. Can’t argue with that logic.
The question remains, will Amandla Stenberg be sufficiently gay enough?
