After a decade, Avengers: Infinity War looks to shake-up the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it.
We’re officially just days away from the release of Marvel Studios’ latest Avengers film, and with it will likely come the end of the line for some of our favorite heroes. While details surrounding the film remain sparse (nearly all of the cast confirms virtually none of them have even read the full script), there’s little known regarding the latest Avengers film except that we can expect a death… or, rather, deaths. So, with that in mind, we take a look at the massive cast for the film and how many films they still have left on their contracts.
The Avengers:
Robert Downey Jr.
MCU Appearances to Date: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, The Incredible Hulk (Post Credit Cameo), Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming
After ten years as Tony Stark, many are expecting Robert Downey Jr. to hang up the suit sooner rather than later. Downey Jr.’s Marvel contract is a tricky matter. The actor has continually re-upped — and re-negotiated — his contract throughout the years, both ahead of Avengers and Spider-Man: Homecoming — so it’s not entirely clear just when his contract is up.
However, Avengers 4 looks certain to be the actor’s last hurrah as the much-loved hero, as he’s been turning his focus to other projects that he’s producing through his Team Downey production banner, including a Dr. Doolittle reboot. If Avengers 4 does make for his final turn as Stark, he’ll at least get to go out alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, who is returning for what appears to be Pepper’s potential final outing in the MCU. (Note: Paltrow’s contract was thought to be up ahead of her appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so it’s unclear if she’ll return yet again after Avengers 4.)
Chris Evans
MCU Appearances to Date: Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers, Thor: The Dark World (Cameo), Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man (Post Credit Scene), Spider-Man: Homecoming (Cameo)
Although Downey Jr.’s Marvel exit is still up in the air, Chris Evans has already gone on record to say his Marvel contract is up as of the still untitled Avengers 4. While this doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t re-up his contract for an extra picture or two, for all intents-and-purposes, Evans’ time as Captain America is over as of next May — even if he manages to survive the battle against Thanos.
Mark Ruffalo
MCU Appearances to Date: Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 (Cameo), Thor: Ragnarok, Team Thor (Uncredited)
Mark Ruffalo, like most of the core Avengers cast, signed a six picture deal when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe ahead of 2012’s The Avengers. With a solo movie off the cards, the actor has only scratched the surface on his contract compared to his on-screen teammates. As cameos generally don’t count towards contract fulfillment, Ruffalo has only appeared in three films thus far, meaning after Avengers: Infinity War, he’ll still have two films to go. While the cast list for Avengers 4 is still up in the air, it seems all but certain the Hulk will return, leaving one film left on Ruffalo’s contract.
Chris Hemsworth
MCU Appearances to Date: Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Team Thor
Like Evans, Hemsworth has gone on record to say that following the filming of Avengers 4, his contract has been fulfilled. Unlike Evans, however, Hemsworth doesn’t seem eager to say goodbye to Thor just yet, which is understandable given he’s been playing this role since 2011.
Still, even with Hemsworth’s contract finished, we still have two films left with his portrayal of Thor: Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 — which set photos have confirmed he’ll appear in alongside Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark.
Scarlett Johansson
Black Widow in Avengers: Infinity War
MCU Appearances to Date: Iron Man 2, Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War
With a Black Widow movie — finally! — in the works, it would appear Johansson’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t over just yet. The actress has never outright stated how many movies she has left on her contract, only revealing that her contract has continually “morphed” throughout the years. It’s thought that, like the others, she initially signed a six picture deal, which would be up with the still untitled Avengers 4.
Given that she’s confirmed to have shot scenes with Brie Larson, she’s pretty much confirmed for the Infinity War follow-up. However, with the news having hit earlier this year that Marvel Studios has hired a writer to pen a solo Black Widow movie, with Johansson working closely with the writer to flesh out the story, it appears her contract has been changed yet again. Until the fourth Avengers film hits next year, and we learn of Natasha’s fate, it’s hard to know if the planned solo film will be a one-off or a potential trilogy. If it’s a one-off, Black Widow could mark the end of Johansson’s run as the hero.
Jeremy Renner
Hawkeye-Civil-War
MCU Appearances to Date: Thor (Cameo), Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War
The man that has been absent from virtually all Infinity War promotion thus far, Jeremy Renner is thought to have signed the standard Marvel deal, with the thought that he also has a deal in place for a potential standalone film. Given that a solo Hawkeye film is not on the horizon — at least, not anytime soon — it’s safe to say that, following Avengers: Infinity War, which he really is in, and Avengers 4, Renner will only have one more film left on his contract. (Note: His cameo in Thor is not believed to count toward his contractual appearances.) Perhaps he’ll show up in the solo Black Widow movie?
Paul Bettany
MCU Appearances to Date: Iron Man (as Jarvis), Iron Man 2(as Jarvis), The Avengers(as Jarvis), Iron Man 3(as Jarvis), Avengers: Age of Ultron (as Jarvis & Vision), Captain America: Civil War
Bettany’s contract situation is a bit different than the others. Like Downey Jr., Bettany has actually been involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning, despite only taking on a live-action role with 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. If he’d signed the standard six picture deal ahead of Iron Man, he would have fulfilled that with Captain America: Civil War.
However, his contract has changed throughout the years, and it’s unknown just how many films the actor is signed on for. As it stands, though, we know that Bettany will appear in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. The character’s future — as well as Bettany’s — within the MCU remains to be seen beyond that.
Anthony Mackie
MCU Appearances to Date: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man (Film & Post Credit Scene)
Mackie is believed to have signed on for six films, although he’s also openly joked that his contract consists of way more than that. With his character already confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War, that would bring his total number of on screen appearances to five, leaving one more film left on his contract. While it’s still unknown whether everyone survives Infinity War, it seems likely we’ll see Falcon pop up again in Avengers 4, and if he does, that would make for the end of Mackie’s contract.
Of course, if Marvel Studios opts to pass the mantle of Captain America on the Sam instead of Bucky, we can expect to see the actor extend his contract. As it currently stands, however, his contract should wrap with Avengers 4.
Sebastian Stan
MCU Appearances to Date: Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man (Post Credit Scene), Black Panther (Post Credit Scene)
Like Mackie, Stan has been very open regarding his Marvel contract; at times, perhaps too open. Years back, while doing press for The Winter Soldier, Stan revealed that he’d signed on for nine pictures. To date, he’s appeared in three films and two post credit scenes. As the post credit scenes are considered cameos, they tend to not count towards the overall picture count on an actor’s contract. Thus, Avengers: Infinity War would leave him with five more pictures on his contract, not including Avengers 4 — which he more than likely filmed scenes for, as well.
Taking that into consideration, Stan should still have three pictures remaining on his contract. Perhaps it’s about time for Bucky to take up the Captain America mantle following Chris Evans’ exit as the star-spangled hero?
Elizabeth Olsen
MCU Appearances to Date: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War
Olsen made her MCU debut with the much-debated Avengers: Age of Ultron and has since proven to be a character vital to the story Marvel has been telling on the big screen. Her role in the universe grew exponentially with Captain America: Civil War, and we know that she’s set to appear in the next two Avengers films.
Unfortunately, Olsen has never publicly discussed her contract, so it’s not known how many films she signed on for, though it’s believed to be six. After the next two Avengers films, Olsen would have two more films left to film. Maybe we will get that solo film, after all?
Tom Holland
MCU Appearances to Date: Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming
Unlike his fellow Avengers, Holland’s MCU contract is a bit more complex. With two separate studios involved — Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures — there’s a lot of dealmaking that needs to go into any future appearances for the character beyond the initial six movies he signed on for.
Having already appeared in two films, with his character confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War and two more solo movies, that would leave him with one more film left on his contract — which is presumably Avengers 4. After that, Holland’s future as Spider-Man remains unclear as the initial deal between Sony and Marvel will be complete, and the two will need to come together again to renegotiate any additional MCU appearances by Holland’s Peter Parker.
Chadwick Boseman
MCU Appearances to Date: Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther
Most actors get the standard six picture deal when they join the MCU. Boseman, however, is thought to have only signed on for five films. With two appearances already under his belt, and his character confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, that would leave him with just one more film on his contract. Given that Kevin Feige has already confirmed Marvel will be making a sequel to the box office smash, Black Panther, it seems like the actor’s contractual appearances are already accounted for.
Of course, there’s also the possibility that Marvel and Boseman enter conversations for future appearances beyond those initial five in his contract, if the two parties haven’t already.
Paul Rudd
MCU Appearances to Date: Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War
While Rudd played coy about his casting as Ant-Man ahead of the official announcement, the actor has since been very open regarding his contract with Marvel, confirming he’s signed the standard six picture contract with Marvel. With Ant-Man confirmed to appear in three more films — Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Avengers 4 — Rudd looks to have one more picture on his contract following the events of Avengers 4, presumably a third, and more than likely final, film in the Ant-Man franchise.
Don Cheadle
MCU Appearances to Date: Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War
Cheadle took over the role as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes with 2010’s Iron Man 2 following the departure of Terrance Howard, who played the character in the first film. Since then, Cheadle’s Rhodey has appeared in four separate films alongside Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. He’s already confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. Assuming he signed the standard six picture deal, Cheadle may be looking to say goodbye to War Machine following Avengers 4.
Benedict Cumberbatch
MCU Appearances to Date: Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok (cameo)
While Cumberbatch has never officially commented on his contract, even going as far to suggest a sequel to Doctor Strange may not be in the cards, it’s believed — thanks to Joaquin Phoenix walking away from the role — that the actor signed the standard six picture deal. It’s thought that, like with the other cameo appearances by MCU actors, Cumberbatch’s appearance as the magical hero in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t necessarily count towards his overall deal. If this is, in fact, the case, that would leave him with three pictures left on his contract following Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. And despite the actor suggesting otherwise, a sequel to Doctor Strange does appear to be in the works, suggesting that he’s going to be around for quite some time yet.
Guardians of the Galaxy:
Zoe Saldana
avengers: infinity war
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Saldana is one of the few actors within the MCU that has never commented publicly on her contract for Marvel Studios, making it difficult to know for sure just how many pictures she has left on her contract. However, like with a majority of the other cast members, it’s believed that Saldana has signed on for six pictures as Gamora, with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 confirmed to take up two of those slots. And while James Gunn has offered no confirmation of which Guardians will be returning for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, Saldana is expected to reprise her role, which would leave her with one more film still remaining on her contract beyond that.
Chris Pratt
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
During the promotional tour for the first Guardians movie, Pratt willingly discussed his contract, revealing that he initially signed on for a trilogy of Guardians films, “plus another couple.” Those other couple look to be Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. Of course, while Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 is happening, with the expectation that it’ll go into production sometime next year, it’s unknown whether Peter Quill will return as it all depends on the events of the fourth Avengers movie. If we were to hold Pratt to his word, though, that would suggest he has no films left on his contract after next year’s Avengers 4, although he has previously revealed he’s more than ready to sign on for more… if Marvel will have him.
Karen Gillan
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Like some of her fellow Guardians cast members, it’s unknown how many films Gillan has signed on for. Just recently, the actress revealed that she initially signed on for the role of Nebula believing she’d only be filming a few days worth of scenes for the first film, only to learn that her character would return for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and then Avengers: Infinity War. Thanks to a set photo which saw Gillan joined by some of her fellow female Marvel heroes, we know Nebula will appear in Avengers 4. Her future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond that, however, remains to be seen.
Pom Klementieff
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Klementieff’s contract is also a mystery, however, it’s likely the actress signed the typical six picture deal ahead of her debut in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. We know Mantis will be in Avengers: Infinity War and, as with Gillan, her presence in the female cast photo all but confirms her for Avengers 4. While Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 seems likely, her future beyond that is uncertain as James Gunn has said Vol. 3 will conclude his trilogy with this iteration of the team.
Dave Bautista
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Unlike other stars, Bautista has not been very open regarding his Marvel contract. However, as one of the core members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s believed that like Pratt and Saldana, he signed a six picture deal with the studio.
We know he’s in Avengers: Infinity War, and while his fate beyond that remains to be seen, Avengers 4 does seem like a possibility. After all, set photos seemed to suggest time travel may be at play, leaving the window open for multiple characters to return, even if they die in Infinity War. With that in mind, Infinity War would leave the actor with three more pictures left on his deal.
With Avengers 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 a possibility, though, it could very well be that the wrestler-turned-actor is nearing the end of his contract much sooner than fans think, leaving only one more feature left.
Bradley Cooper
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Given that Cooper’s role is voicing a CGI character, the actor isn’t as involved with press as his fellow cast-mates, it’s difficult to know just how many films he’s signed on for. However, the standard six picture deal seems all but likely, and with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 taking up two of those spots, that would leave two more films on his contract. Of course, with Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 confirmed, that would account for one of those pictures, leaving one more flick on his contract.
Vin Diesel
MCU Appearances to Date: Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
Another actor lending his voice to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s unknown just how many pictures Diesel signed on for, however, it would seem to be the standard six picture deal. As it stands, Diesel has only voiced Groot in two films, and will return to do so in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. It’s also presumed that he’ll return for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, which would leave him with a single picture left on his contract if he, indeed, signed the standard Marvel deal.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 27.
After a decade, Avengers: Infinity War looks to shake-up the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it.
We’re officially just days away from the release of Marvel Studios’ latest Avengers film, and with it will likely come the end of the line for some of our favorite heroes.
