Don Cheadle Talks War Machine’s State of Mind in Avengers: Infinity War
Posted by Kaitlyn Booth March 23, 2018
Captain America: Civil War had some serious consequences for a lot of members of the Avengers, but one of them really took a hard hit: War Machine, aka Rhodey. Some friendly fire from the Vision ended in an injury that left Rhodey unable to walk. Tony was able to find a machine to help, but that doesn’t mean those wounds are completely healed. Actor Don Cheadle spoke to ComicBook.com about where Rhodey is going into Avengers: Infinity War.
“Well, clearly there was a pretty significant moment for Rhodey at the end of Civil War, where he was accidentally shot out of the air by Vision,” Cheadle pointed out. “I think we worked it out over the break. And now he’s coming back to the Avengers too, back to his team. A little ambivalent I think with a new rig by Tony, which of course he had to put his name on. So Tony! Like I’m gonna not know who made them. And he’s rejoining the team and reintroduced back here in this Wakanda storyline.”
What we know so far is that the Wakanda story line involves the Avengers going to Wakanda to protect Vision with a bunch of the people he was fighting in Civil War. That would would be hard for anyone to get over.
“I think it’s something that he’s fighting to put behind him,” Cheadle said. “But absolutely, it creeps up. There’s innuendo. There’s shots taken. There’s things said. Don’t want certain people behind me. I’m gonna keep a eye on everybody, I wanna keep that jewel in front of me, not behind me. So yeah, I think he’s, like I said, I think he’s negotiating this reunion and his rejoining this team.”
Rhodey isn’t just struggling with working with his fellow Avengers but also with his relationship with Tony, according to Cheadle. Tony and Rhodey have been friends for a long time, but Rhodey often finds himself at odds because he’s Tony’s friend, an Avenger, but also a member of the military.
“I think there are definitely more questions for Rhodey,” Cheadle said. “I think he was always somewhat straddling with having Tony as a friend and trying to support him and do what he needed, being outside of the lines, but still somehow trying to stay within the chain of command and the military man that he is. So I think that’s become more fraught and probably more frayed as the storylines go forward.”
That’s not to say that the bromance is dying, but more that these two close friends won’t be spending a lot of times together in Infinity War.
“I think at the end of the day that division was not something that was really fomented by the characters in the movie,” Cheadle said. “There were outside pressures that created that division. And they ultimately want to be back together. So, I think that Tony who has yet to make an appearance so I imagine that he’s understanding of it.”
Maybe Shuri can help Rhodey with his back when he goes to Wakanda to help protect the Vision.
Summary: As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Anthony Mackie. It will be released on April 27th.
